An elopement wedding day in paris, France feels like something out of a movie. The beautiful streets, the historical architecture, the endless art museums and how the city lights up at night is simply magical. When I knew I was going to be speaking at LEgacy Workshop in France and then spending time in paris afterwards, I just knew I wanted to document an elopement bridal editorial in some of the most beautiful locations in paris. And of course, with my friends birthday being nearby, I offered to have her and her partner join my husband and I in Paris and I would document her and her boyfriend, while also treating them on their trip. Capturing real couples is the best for inspiring your creativity in between wedding seasons, as they already have such a natural bond. It also helps when you can simply have fun together as they are some of your closest friends.
MAggie and angus spent the morning of this elopement day editorial in their adorable and quaint airbnb in Paris. They both got ready together before we headed to the streets to enjoy roaming around paris together. I brought vintage veils along from Those were the days bridal in EDinburgh, Scotland. the lovely owner, claire, of those were the days bridal carefully curates and hand selects all of the pieces in her shop on saint stephen street in my personal favorite neighborhood in edinburgh, stockbridge. and I’m not biased just because it’s my personal neighborhood where we live, but it really is the best for small business cafes, restaurants, clothing shops, thrift stores and cinnamon buns. so if you are ever visiting edinburgh, definitely pop over to stockbridge.
anyways, back to the elopement editorial in paris. Maggie was wearing a vintage veil from those were the days and had multiple outfits throughout the day, because even on a wedding day there tend to be outfit changes more and more, so why not on your elopement day as well. The floral bouquet was designed by my friend Beverly, of Heidi GOld Florals, She was able to piece together a stunning little bouquet that packed a punch of color with a unique blend of florals in the arrangement.
The first place we took a few individual and couple photographs in the parisian neighborhood around their airbnb. If you ever have an elopement or wedding day in paris, honestly, you can’t go wrong with most residential streets all around the city, as the architecture is stunning no matter which district you are based in. And by photographing around your lodging, you can have those images that are more unique to you before heading to the classic spots in the city where inevitably you may see other couples having wedding photos done there as well.
We only saw two other brides the entire day, which I thought was fairly good for us, especially photographing bridal portraits around the eiffel tower and the louvre museum. At the eiffel tower, we started taking the elopement portraits a few blocks away from the actual tower, so it was a bit quieter to start out with the tower in the background, and then slowly walked toward the eiffel tower for a larger scene. There are actually plenty of ways to crop out the crowds, so I wouldn’t be nervous to get closer to the eiffel tower if you are ever there on your wedding day. We also found that everyone parted ways for the bride in her wedding dress.
The next stop on our tour around paris for elopement portraits, was the domaine national du palais-royal. I have always loved the courtyard that has a stunning artwork installation of striped sculptures that resemble a chess board. IT really is such a beautiful spot for wedding photos and has many corners that aren’t crowded at all for intimate moments together.
we then walked across the street to the louvre museum for more wedding portraits in front of the stunning piece of architecture, the modern grand pyramid. THe beautiful, glass pyramid is a structure that pei cobb Freed & partners created and I will Forever be impressed by such beautiful and thoughtful design. always brings back fond memories when i’m in it’s presence.
After staying at the louvre until the sun started to set, to see the pyramid lit up at night and the fountains reflection of ripples shining through, we then walked over to the seine river. I love how the seine river has many sections and a lower walkway by the river so your elopement can be a more intimate one, especially when it’s darker at night and the only light is from the parisian street lamps.
The eiffel tower has a light show in the evenings and you could see the glow of the tower between maggie and angus from the seine river walkway. It really was a magical way to end this elopement editorial with the sweetest couple of friends around. I’m truly grateful for them entrusting me to document the two of them around paris. Traveling the world alone is lovely, but even better with loved ones. x

I’m always amazed at the detail that Sarah puts into her gown collections. Varca’s latest bridal collection has so many interesting sleeves, cuts, fabrics and even removable extensions! So anyone from the more minimal to the more extra bride has something they can relate to! Varca names all of her gowns after names of women who has inspired them and her! Go check out Varca’s Instagram to see the names for each individual gown. Below are a few of my favorite images of each wedding dress, taken in her new studio space.
Sarah, of Varca Bridal, designed and is making me a custom wedding dress! I could not be more excited about having one of her custom pieces. Ever since she reached out to me about a shoot a few years ago, I instantly fell in love with her style and her as a person! If you’re looking for someone to make you a custom gown that will feel 100 percent like you mixed with Sarah’s creative energy, then definitely reach out to be one of her few custom brides that she takes on each year. I feel so honored to be one of them for this year!
Let me know if you all have any favorites, my favorite from her collection is definitely the VERONICA, and not just because I grew up collecting and ready Archie Comics endlessly. The sleeves are just amazing and totally give the dress that 19th century glam. The earrings that Sarah paired with each dress for this shoot were handmade by Ashley Jordan, of the Fashion Collective. Her earring line is called Akin Studio. Ashley’s statement earrings are all made of polymer clay and compliment Varca’s wedding gowns beautifully.
The hair for this shoot was done by Juan José of Hair by Juan José. His personality is exactly what you want on your wedding day, smiley, fun, just a joy to be around! And of course he created the perfect relaxed updo’s to compliment these beautifully detailed and structured gowns. All of the makeup for this collection shoot was done by the lovely Alyssa of Makeup by Alyssa Cruz. Her soft smokey eyes and natural tones are exactly what a bride should want on their wedding day so they feel a bit done up, but also feel like themselves. These soft hair and makeup I believe are the perfect way to feature your Varca dress or any wedding dress on a wedding day. I’m just all about the natural hair and makeup look for any occasion, personally.

The dictionary definition for Bohemian as a noun is “a socially unconventional person, especially one who is involved in the arts” and as an adjective is “socially unconventional in an artistic way.” I wanted to give background to the word that is really trending in weddings and style nowadays. The technical definition is about someone who is artistic and unconventional in their society, a going against the grain type. The reason I believe most bohemian styles tend to portray florals and the hippie style is because of the era of when the term was initially coined. Either way, that is how it is meant when used in the bridal and wedding world. This bohemian bridal fashion shoot was styled by Ariana Anderson, a stylist based in Chicago, IL. The florals in the hair and amazing blunt eyeshadow was created by Michelle of Mink loves Makeup, another Chicago based hair and makeup artist. These hair and makeup designs really feature the bohemian floral style in a minimalist way. And of course, the bohemian feelings couldn’t be portrayed without the deep emotions and beautiful modeling by Chicago based model and artist, Dominique Ashanti.
I’m so grateful to be able to have these days of creativity in between shooting weddings. Being able to come together with like minded friends in the creative field and just have the freedom to create and knowing that whatever comes from it is exactly what is was meant to be, is such a beautiful thing. These portraits were taken in my Chicago home. As I’m transitioning within the next year to living full time in Scotland after I get married, I’m trying to cherish having this beautiful open space to create inspiring editorials. This season of life living in Chicago and traveling back and forth to Edinburgh to see my fiancé has been a beautiful one, and being in one place all of the time will be wonderful, but I will always look fondly on the creativity that this space has given me during this season of life in Wicker Park, an artistic neighborhood in Chicago.

I can never get enough of brides who wear vintage. Vintage will always hold a special place in my heart, as I love how you use your imagination of the stories that the piece previously experienced. It really is a beautiful thing. This is another example of how beautiful the vintage wedding dresses from Those Were The Days Bridal can be styled for your elopement. If you from or ever get the chance to visit Scotland, you need to make your way over to South Queensferry. They are a beautiful waterfront town with cobblestoned streets, beautiful bridges, quaint cafes and endless historic architecture that is protected by the Scottish Government. Our friends Ruth and Mark live out there, and we are constantly having sleepovers at their home with delicious meals and endless chats into the night. All this to say, we love South Queensferry and would highly recommend it for your elopement or even just a place to visit for a Saturday stroll.
If you do decide to make it out to South Queensferry, definitely check out The Manna House. It’s the cafe we frequent often when we are there. They have excellent honey lattes, delicious pastries and their French Toast platter is definitely an American portion… which I unashamedly love. Ross also enjoys their fresh baked loafs of bread and salads, you know, the healthier options. Also, if you enjoy walking, the Dalmeny estate has beautiful walkways with gorgeous pathways along the coastline, and we’ve definitely enjoyed some beautiful evenings of S’mores with our friends on the sand. It’s truly a lovely area of Scotland to visit!

There are so many talented wedding dress designers that I love to recommend to brides, because I love the creativity and uniqueness that the gowns give to each individual. With that said, you know what else is unique and custom? VINTAGE. I have always been a huge fan of vintage clothing. In college, going to the huge thrift stores with friends, I would find the best gems of vintage dresses, denim and purses (that I still have to this day!). It’s always the best feeling knowing that you have a one of a kind piece, or at least for all you know, it’s the very last garment in tact of that vintage piece, in that size, potentially in the world! You just never know. It’s exciting when you find a vintage wedding dress that you love, because the sizes do tend to vary based on the decade the designer lived in.

Since I’ve been here in Edinburgh for half of the year for the last few years, until I start living here full time soon, I am always making new friends in the wedding industry! The reason I love genuinely getting to know individuals in the Scotland wedding world, is because when I know who they are as a person, I can confidently refer them to all of my future Edinburgh or Scotland brides here. You can only see suppliers work online, but when you get to know wedding suppliers in person, you will be able to refer them with more confidence and match them to future brides that share the same passions and personalities as them. For example, I’ve been said to be more soft spoken, quirky and silly in person than anticipated. Many say my personality is different than what they expected from my images (in a good way it seems!) when you know me in person, and I think that it’s so important to meet people face to face and have that personality connection, as well as loving their beautiful work online. So if you can meet local suppliers in your community, then I would highly encourage you to spend time with them, not only for shoots (which is a great way to help each other and create beautiful work for fun!), but grab coffee, keep up with them online, be genuinely invested in their life behind the scenes and not just in repeated comments for others to see.
Carolyn Baxter is a dress designer, based in the heart of Scotland. She not only designs, but hand sews all of her gowns in her Edinburgh studio. Carolyn not only designs wedding dresses, but also bridesmaid dresses and event gowns! Her work amazes me because it’s so custom. I love the creativity and admire the craftsmanship that goes into the process of making all of her own gowns. Each dress has it’s own unique details and gives the person wearing it endless confidence. Carolyn’s gowns are a combination of femininity and elegance, while still having an edge to them. For this editorial shoot, I captured the “Julianna” and “Glimmer” gowns. We wandered the streets of Edinburgh and the harsh Scottish winds really showed all of the texture and movement of these beautiful dresses very well. These gowns are listed under her Event Dresses page on her website, but this shoot is a prime example of how any dress can be styled for your wedding day. You don’t have to just look in the bridal section for your wedding dress. I’ve even seen brides wear dresses meant for bridesmaids and they looks stunning! There are no rules when looking for your wedding dress, if you like a dress, whether it’s labeled for events, prom, balls or bridesmaids, if you want to wear it as your wedding dress, you do it proudly and I promise no one will even tell it’s purposed intention because the only definition of a wedding dress is the dress you end up wearing on the day you get married to your best friend… and that will always be your wedding dress.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of documenting an elopement editorial at one of Scotland’s newest intimate wedding venues, St. Mary’s Space. It’s a beautifully quaint restored chapel located in the Highlands of Scotland. It used to be known as St. Mary's Church and Rectory and was built in the 1890's. The owner, Charlotte, and her family has lived here since 2011 and have created a unique venue for individuals to come in and use it in creative ways. St. Mary’s Space is surrounded by a beautiful wooded area has a majestic view of a river and mountains in the distance.
The lead wedding planner of Scarlett & Bell, Mercedes, together with the talented Little White Cow, leading wedding prop stylists, and Wildflower Workshop, one of the best wedding florists in all of Scotland, created beautiful scenes that will inspire you for your own intimate wedding or elopement in St. Mary’s Space. This Scotland elopement shoot was inspired by the chilling richness of Scottish spring in the setting of an ancient ruin. We focused on the harmonious coupling of the ancient and modern, combining textures and materials found from the natural setting. The flower pieces incorporated foraged lichen branches, dried bracken and budding witch-hazel, and rich tones from skimmia berries and antique roses. The historic setting and the rich floral pieces were held in juxtaposition with the modern fabrics in the eclectic clothing and jewellery, sourced internationally from independent designers. The tablescape was also inspired by this juxtaposition between the old and new, with the raw wood and moss, and the tangled gold netting and gilded branch candelabras.

Between her and the lovely Adelaide of Adelaide’s Flowers, who I’ve had the pleasure of capturing her stunning florals for an intimate scottish wedding of mine last summer, are a dream team and provided the setting and vision for this gorgeous shoot and I’m honestly just the blessed lady who was asked to document their romantical vision into memorable stills. If you are looking for an elopement photographer in Scotland, I would absolutely love to capture your love in the Scottish Highlands! I have traveled all over Scotland, and not only have shot real weddings, but have done so many trips to explore the land for leisure as well as to scout for future brides who are flying into Scotland. It’s so fun to do styled shoots in new areas of Scotland because you get to find the best areas and scout for unique landscapes that haven’t been shot before by other photographers. It’s so nice to try and find different places for every bride that is traveling to Scotland. The main Scottish landscapes are of course excellent venues to elope, but I really love finding places to elope in Scotland that are more off the beaten path and less traveled to. I just really love going on hikes in Scotland. Just being in the fresh air, experiencing new places and being so far away from the rest of the population is one of my favorite places to be. Capturing weddings started as a way to document people in love and I’ve thankfully with the help of trusting couples, have made a create a career out of it, but now I have started the nature aspect of it just as much. There is something about photographing a couple and their raw love amongst the elements of the mountains and sea coastlines, that truly makes their wedding photos have a raw and authentic feel to them. Coffee + Love | Chicago Wedding
I love when a bride feels good about herself and you can see the excitement and joy overflowing in all of her motions. Twirling in her dress, making sweet eye contact with her love and nonstop smiling from ear to ear. Sometimes my cheeks even hurt after a wedding day from smiling so much. I also love that her tattoo says "Where there's a will, there's a way!"
This wedding shoot at Chicago Workshop is a perfect way to show you that you can have an intimate wedding (which I LOVE) and still have all of your favorite wedding vendors, minus the huge gathering.
And what could be better than a couple getting married in a creative studio enjoying their favorite coffee and donut filled dessert bar?
